Andrew Thiess, Professional EngineerDid you know?  The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has published a series of guides, called Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDG's), with an energy savings target of 30% over ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999.  These guides provide energy saving goals and strategies, prescriptive tables, and tips and approaches on implementation.  All of the recommendations for each climate zone, including Climate Zone 2, which includes Southeast and South-central Texas, are provided in very user-friendly single-page tables.  The guides are a step toward achieving the "net-zero" energy building.

ASHRAE currently has published four guides:
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Office Buildings (up to 20,000 square feet),
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Retail Buildings (up to 20,000 square feet),
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings (Elementary, Middle and High School buildings), and
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Warehouses and Self-Storage Buildings (warehouses up to 50,000 square feet and self-storage buildings that use unitary heating and air conditioning).
ASHRAE is also planning to publish the following guides in the near future:
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Highway Lodging (1st quarter 2009),
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Existing Buildings (2nd quarter 2009),
  • Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Healthcare Facilities (3rd quarter 2009),
  • Advanced Energy Design Guides for K-12 School Buildings, Small Office Buildings, and Small Retail Buildings (to be determined)
