For energy code compliance on commercial buildings, the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1-2007 both allow a certain amount of "lighting power" according to the use and type of building space. For example, a retail space is allowed 1.5 watts per square foot of floor area. An office is allowed 1.0 watts per square foot. The lighting power allowance is carefully balanced with the need for adequate light. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) publishes recommended illuminance values for common tasks. For example, the IES recommends a weighted average of 50 footcandles for a department store sales area. The IES has modeled ways to achieve the recommended lighting levels using commonly available energy efficient light fixtures. This modeling information is used by the code agencies to set allowable wattage per square foot. Building plans should specify the fixture, lamp types and layout needed to achieve the desired lighting levels without exceeding the total wattage allowed by code. Plans should also include provisions for lighting controls, such as automatic shutoff, 50% lighting reduction, occupancy sensors and photocells as these requirements apply to certain building sizes and applications. During construction, care should be taken to stick with the approved lighting plan. Lighting should not be added-to or changed without first checking to be sure it is allowed by code.
